Entrance of the lift
When planning your residential lift, an essential item to consider is the entranceway. The doors and gates not only ensure passenger safety but also establish an aesthetic link with your home’s interior.
When selecting doors and gates for your home lift, multiple factors should be considered. Two types of lift doors should be incorporated into all residential lifts: the car door and the landing door.
Landing or hoistway door
The landing door is the one that is seen when you approach the lift to call it to your location. It’s designed to remain closed and locked when the lift is either not at the landing or has not been used for a minute or two. The controller monitors it to prevent lift movement while the door is open.
Various options are available to seamlessly match the door with your home’s aesthetics.
Swing door
The landing door can be either a swing door, which resembles the typical hallway door in your house, or a two or three-speed door. A swing door is designed to match the other doors in your home. Swing doors can be fire-rated or non-rated, aligning with local business codes. Fire-rated doors can be steel or wood swinging panel in a metal doorjamb. The non-rated door is typically a wood jamb with wood swinging panel. Some manufacturers offer a non-rated wood doorjamb with a swinging door panel provided to match the room décor. Two or three-speed automatic doors are similar in style to commercial lifts.
Car door safety
The car door can be operated automatically or manually and is monitored to ensure that the car door is in the closed position before the lift will leave a landing. At times, a light ray or light curtain is also installed. This device is similar to the safety device used to detect obstacles interfering in the travel path of an overhead garage door but has many more sensors to guard a much larger area.
Accordion doors
Accordion sliding doors are collapsible lift car gates. Accordion doors must be closed before the lift operates and can be either manually or automatically opened. Regular swing doors are installed on each lift landing, while the accordion door collapses into a pocket of the lift car when opened. This allows you to match landing doors to your home decor. All landing doors have a locking device to ensure the lift will not operate when the doors are open and to make sure landing doors cannot be opened when the lift is not at the landing.
