What is a LULA Elevator?
LU/LA stands for Limited Use/Limited Application. The LULA lift provides access for low occupancy/low rise commercial buildings where a traditional passenger elevator is not feasible or required by code. It is ideal for applications up to 6 stops and 25 ft (standard) or 40 ft (with approved variance) of travel.
All LULA elevators are limited by speed, travel, and capacity in order to comply with ASME A17.1 Section 5.2 and the ADA. Also check with your local authorities as they may have additional requirements.

LULA: small elevators with a big impact
In new-builds, where an accessible route is required, a conventional commercial elevator may be the only available option. But for many other buildings, a Limited Use/Limited Access lift is a cost-efficient and space-saving alternative to conventional elevators.
A Limited Use/Limited Access elevator is smaller than traditional commercial and passenger elevators and therefore needs fewer building adaptations for installation. As a matter of fact, a LULA lift combines the benefits of a commercial elevator and a wheelchair elevator. And, even though LULA elevators are smaller than conventional passenger lifts, they are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and constitute an excellent option to conventional elevators and lifts.
ADA & ASME compliance
Speed, travel, and capacity for all LULA elevators must be limited in order to comply with ASME A17.1 Section 5.2 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Some of the basic requirements are the ability to provide:
- Capacity: 1400 lbs
- Cab Size: 18 square feet
- Door openings: Single entry (same side), adjacent (90 degree angle), and open-through (opposite sides)

Symmetry LULA elevator in the Audrian Building
Inside the Audrian building resides the first Symmetry center-opening Limited Use/Limited Access elevator. This project was a labor of love for us and it required many hours of skillful craftmanship. But the result looks amazing and the elevator blends in perfectly with the architectural style of the building.
Safety first
LULA lifts must meet the same safety codes as traditional passenger elevators, as laid out in the ASME A17. 1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. Because the safety of our elevator users always comes first, Symmetry LULA elevators include a comprehensive set of safety features, such as:
- ADA-compliant hands-free emergency phone
- Keyed in-car stop switch and alarm button
- Emergency lighting in car interior
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for car lowering and power opening of the car and hoistway doors
Thanks to these features, passengers are always safe when traveling with our elevators, even in the event of a power failure.
Telescopic elevator doors
To cater for your comfort and safety, our LULA elevator doors operate smoothly and at any speed that you want within the limits of codes and regulations. And, because every building is different, our elevator doors are available in a wide range of finishes. In addition, our doors can be placed on all sides of the elevator, except for the machinery side.
